Sport Heroes Walk Against HIV/AIDS is a non-profile, fund raising and advocacy organisation that has been running the project of the same name for the past eight years. The project is the brain child of television personality Cynthia Tshaka, who has made it her goal to use sport as a means to combat HIV/AIDS throughout South Africa, particularly in rural and underpriviledged areas.
Sportspeople who’ve participated in previous Sport Heroes Walks include footballers Desiree Ellis, and Veronica Phewa, long distance runner Willie Tolo, and Boxing Legend Baby Jake Matlala. Sports that have been represented on the Walk include football, karate, basketball, netball, boxing, athletics, rugby and cricket.
The project has during its existence distributed millions of Rands worth of sports goods and material to sport clubs and AIDS hospices and clinics across the country.
Since the start of the project many organisations have come on board in support. Key partners of the project is Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA), the National Association of People living with HIV/AIDS, and the NGO Right to Know, who provides free HIV/AIDS testing facilities along the Walk route. There are also a number of product sponsors on board, including Sasol and Nike.
